Abstract

On May 18, 2011, park agents accompanied by gendarmes of the research section were on routine mission inside the Minkebe national park during which they came across a vehicle inside which were four individuals, firearms, several bushmeat products and ivory tusks. During the interrogation, Nguema Ondo Alain and Ondo Nzolo Damien admitted to be the owner of the tusks that they removed from five elephants they have killed with their big hunting guns and that they intended to sell the tusks to two Chadian named Mbaye living at Mitzic and Abdramane Adam living at Oyem. The latter was subsequently arrested. Abessolo Ondo Janvier declared that he went to the bush not for hunting but for fishing and he was carrying out a firearm only for security reasons. Nze Mezui Bruno declared to have been to the forest to hunt small bushmeat species where he met with the others. During the hearing Ondo Nzolo denied the declarations made by Nze Bruno by further declaring that they all went for hunting at the same time and inside the vehicle of Nze Bruno. All the other suspects except Nze Bruno had an authorization to carry a firearm. Abdramane declared that he hadn’t yet collected the tusks Ondo Nzolo was planning to sell him although both have had similar transaction in the past.
