Abstract

In July 2017, Chuanjie H. contacted Lian (handled separately) to purchase pangolin scales in Africa and smuggled into the country. On the 20th of the same month, Lian informed Chuanjie H. that he had purchased 1,635 kg of pangolin scales. In order to evade customs supervision, Lian purchased 35 tons of sesame seeds in Africa and hid the pangolin scales in the same container, and then shipped from Nigeria to Tianjin Port by sea. Subsequently, Chuanjie H. transferred the payment for the purchase of pangolin scales and sesame (of which pangolin scales cost RMB 519,000) to Lian. On August 19 of the same year, the container carrying the above goods arrived at Tianjin Port. Chuanjie H. entrusted the freight forwarding company to declare imports to the customs under the name of sesame. After importing, pangolin scales and sesame were shipped to Bozhou, Anhui for sale. Chuanjie H. confessed to having smuggled endangered wildlife products.
