Abstract

In July 2019, Makaya Lobila Rozin was returning from a small hunting expedition with his brother during which they have killed two blue duikers and one monkey. They heard some noises of a heard of monkeys. As they were going to the place where the noise was coming from they came across a gorilla. Panicking and feeling unsafe they killed the animal with a caliber 12 rifle type Simplexe. They went back to the camp with the animal cut in pieces for consumption and another part to be smoked. Two days later, Makaya went back to the forest and on his way back he came across rangers who seized his caliber 12 rifle and two small hunting bullets. The next day while he was going to visit his brother, he was caught by the police and brought to the police station and then to the state prosecutor.

Makaya Lobila Rozin was sentenced to thirty six months imprisonment each and XAF 100,000 (one hundred thousand) as fines and to pay jointly XAF 300,000 (three hundred thousand) as damages and court fees. The execution of the imprisonment term was suspended. The imprisonment in default of payment was fixed to eight months for the recovery of fines, two months for court fees and damages.
