Abstract

In July 2012, the accused persons OYO MAGELLAN, ALIKA PAUL, MINKO'O Jean Aimerand and ONGUENE ZE AYDY were arrested by elements of the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife and brought before the Court of First Instance, Djoum to respond to charges of complicity to kill a totally protected class A animal species, illicit burial, and hunting without a permit. That the accused persons were arrested in Cameroon after having carried out a hunting trip in a forest in the Gabonese territory. Upon their arrest, they acknowledged to have engaged in hunting without prior authorization and in the course of this they killed an elephant, a totally protected protected animal by law. They also revealed that the accused, OYO Meyin died during the course of this activity, and they buried him in the forest due to lack of necessary means to bring the body to the family of the deceased. That the accused persons did not only provide the means for carrying out this hunting activity but did so without a hunting license. Moreover, they illegally buried the body of the co-offender OLLE MEYIN, in violation of the laws and regulations in force, in particular burying him without authorization. At the close of interrogations, they were transmitted before the State Attorney for prosecution.
